Tortoise is offering a full-time position, to start as soon as possible based in Paris, France:
Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Launched in 2017, i-Lab 2018 Grand-Prize winner and incubated at Agoranov, Tortoise develops and commercializes innovative solutions in the field of mechanical characterization of materials. Tortoise develops technology and product portfolio based on a patent and proprietary know-how, with applications in material R&D, mechanical characterization, failure analysis and predictive maintenance.
In parallel of the development of novel product lines including cloud analysis and portable device, Tortoise delivers analysis to industrial customers including oil major, steel tubing world leader and technical centres. The company is expanding its team to support product development and related business.
Tortoise’s team currently consist of two-full time employees and two co-founders including the scientist who invented the patented technology, as follows: President, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Data Scientist and Mechanical Engineer (PhD). Your position is based in Paris, France, within Tortoise office and laboratory at Agoranov incubator and Jussieu campus.
Main responsibilities of the Chief Operating Officer:
The COO will be based in Paris to closely work with the other members of the team. In coordination with the President and the CEO, the COO will be responsible for the many aspects of Tortoise development, including:
Drive the business activities including:
Secure delivery to clients, public and private partners by managing human, material and financial resources, respecting schedule, costs and margins;
Drive and coordinate the projects, reporting to the other Directors of the company and to the public funding agencies;
Daily coordinate and trouble-shoot the technical and business operations of the company;
Be the main representative and main point of contact of the company for all matters concerning business execution, public grants, accounting or subcontractors;
Propose, initiate, challenge, help in organising short, medium or long-term actions in order to improve the performance of the company;
Anticipate, propose and prospect additional resources and skills the company shall acquire to sustain its development, strengthen its technology leadership and strategic positioning;
Drive and lead the preparation of monthly Project Review committees;
Regularly meet the customers, prospects, partners, investors, attend key meetings and join other Directors in board meetings;
Drive and coordinate the development of product portfolio including:
Drive the development of new product lines;
Propose, challenge, help in organising short, medium or long-term actions in order to improve the business model and the business plan of the company;
Drive and lead the preparation of monthly Product Review committees;
Regularly meet industry leaders, policy and regulation makers, public funding organizations;
Structure, guide and act / interact with potential customers and partners, monitor & evaluate businesses and products in the portfolio;
Build-up, structure and manage the team in tight collaboration with the President and the CEO;
Support fundraising activities, draft investor and grant proposals, present and negotiate investment proposals with President and CEO, secure delivery of investment reporting;
Reporting to President on all topics described above;
Close collaboration with the President and the CEO on any overall project topics;
Other duties and responsibilities, as required, to help ensure that Tortoise is a success.
Candidates should have the following qualities, skills and experience:
Demonstrated leadership, management and organizational skills; 5 to 10 years of experience of managing teams in challenging environments;
A high level of passion, ambition, entrepreneurial energy, personal initiative and responsibility;
Team spirit and enthusiasm that fits into our ambitious goal;
A demonstrated commitment to serving innovative solutions for industry and a high level of personal integrity;
Fluent English; fluent French a plus;
Experience in at least one, or preferably several of the following:
Engineering in an industrial environment;
Strong skills in business plan drafting and evaluation;
Legal and contractual skills and openness towards legal questions (such as management of companies, intellectual property, terms & conditions etc);
Finance and funds raising;
A sensibility and affinity for innovation and technology development. Substantial experience in industry will be a plus;
Curiosity, endurance and perseverance;
Well-structured and rigorous working habit;
Critical thinking, evidence-based analysis, efficiency and thoroughness, demonstrated by excellent academic qualifications;
Willingness to travel outside France and Europe.
